When applying for nursing is sat and act test scores required?

Im seventeen years old. I have my general education diploma (G.E.D) I would like to attend nursing classes at MedCentral College of Nursing in the fall of 2012. I will be almost 19. I recently received a brochure in the mail about the classes and the requirements for attending the College. Under Admission Requirements it says, "The College invites and maintains a policy of rolling admission. In order for a student to be considered for admission to MedCentral College of Nursing, candidates must submit an application and application fee, official high school or General Education Diploma (G.E.D) transcripts and results of American College Testing Program (ACT) or Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) examination. Although it is not required for admission to MedCentral College of Nursing, an on campus visit with the Office of Admission is highly recommended. It is recommended that a student who is interested in applying for admission meet the following criteria:

-A cumulative grade point average of 3.0, although all applications with less than a 3.0 will be reviewed for their merit and scholarly activity.

-Achieved a composite score of 21 on the ACT or 1050 on the SAT

-Participation in co-curricular activities.

-A proven desire to excel in scholastic achievements."

My question is since I dropped out of school before taking my SAT or the ACT, are the transcripts and results of these tests still required with my application? And if so how do i go about taking these tests? Also, because i missed so much school my grade point average was only like 1.2 and I never participated in any co-curricular activities…will this hurt my chances of being accepted or even considered being accepted into the college? When I was in 7th grade I took the practice SAT and scored very high. Also, throughout the years my scores for the Ohio Proficiency Tests were always way above average in every area. And also my practice Ohio Graduation Test scores were very high.

I have made mistakes in my past but I am now trying to make something of myself and turn things around. I dont wont my past mistakes to hold me back from doing what I would like to do in my future.

SAT Score Calculations?

So i just took a SAT practice test out of the college board book Edition 2.

For the first 3 test, when i entered the scores online, it gave me straightforward test scores (e.g) 650 crit reading, 660 math, 670 writing.

After the first 3 tests, the scores began to vary (e.g.) crit reading 630-710, math 660-720, writing 620-750.

I’m wondering how do i calculate my actual score when the score range has bounds? Like do i take the median between the two bounds (e.g.) (630-710). My score would be 670 in that field?

Should I retake the SAT or instead take the SAT IIs?

Ok, so here’s the situation. I have taken the SAT Reasoning Test twice now, once in January and then just 3 weeks ago, on June 5. January Test: 2000 (1380) Math 710, Writing 620, Reading 670. June Test: 2000 (1380) Math 720, Writing 620, Reading 660.

Now, I am looking at the top universities including the Ivy Leagues, Stanford, Chicago etc. So I also need to take my SAT IIs soon and I know that my SAT score is a good 200 points below Ivy League material. The reason it didn’t improve much during the June one was because I had a lot of things going on and didn’t get sufficient hours of preparation in.

So my question is should I retake my SAT I in October or instead take my SAT IIs and retake my SAT I in November OR just take the SAT IIs and leave my SAT I alone.

P.S. I am planning on applying early action to UChicago in November. I have a decent GPA, extracurriculars, community service etc. so it’s only the test scores I am worried about at this point.

Score this SAT I essay on a scale of 1-6?

Essay Prompt:

We need to remember that wisdom is not just about what we think or know, but more importantly, how we act. Simply being smart is not enough. I define wisdom as the application of intelligence and experience toward the attainment of a common good. In other words, the wisest people are those who look out not just for themselves but also for others.

Adapted from Robert J. Sternberg, “Teaching for Wisdom in Our Schools”

Assignment:
What makes a person wise? Are the wisest people merely smart or are they also concerned with the well-being of others?

Essay:

Many people commonly misinterpret wisdom as the degree or measure of how smart a person is. But the concept of wisdom is so broad that it simply cannot be seen form such a narrow perspective. Holistically, wisdom could be defined as the application of intelligence and experience toward the attainment of a common good. People who possess this quality are the ones who are truly wise, because they are not only smart, but also care about others.

In my opinion, some of the greatest examples of a wise person is no other than our teachers. Teachers are the very embodiment of profound knowledge and wisdom. Teachers acquire knowledge, but instead of keeping it hidden away, they proliferate it and share it with the children who they teach. It is because they are concerned about their well-being that they try to share their knowledge and experiences with them in order to mold their character into an exemplary one. That is why teachers can be considered an appellation of a wise person.

The main quality that separates merely smart people and a smart person is the need to look out not just for themselves but also for others. Being simply smart is not enough. What good is that intelligence if it cannot be applied to make positive changes in others’ lives? In fact, the value of wisdom cannot be measured by IQ numbers or test scores, but rather by the degree to which it is used to to make a difference and impact others’ lives in a positive manner. The wisest people know that this seemingly tiny distinction can make all the difference.

We need to remember that wisdom is not just about what we think or know, but more importantly, how we act. Wisdom should not be hoarded; instead, it is meant to be used to create joy and happiness in the world. The person who uses his smarts to improve the lives of others can be considered truly wise.

Could I get into Northwestern University?

I just finished my sophomore year, and I believe I got a 3.56 GPA this year, but my weighted GPA is around 3.8. I’m planning on taking IB Diploma classes next year, and since I know my grades aren’t as impressive as they need to be, I’m going to be making a study group with a few friends of mine.

The IB classes I plan to take are: IB Junior and Senior English HL, IB Psychology SL, IB Anthropology SL, IB Biology HL 1-2 and 3-4, IB Theory of Knowledge, IB French 7-8 and 9-10 HL, and IB Math SL.

I play the piano, flute, and french horn, and I was nominated into the Oregon Ambassadors of Music program. I’ve done over 160 hours of community service last summer at the Oregon Zoo, I’m an International Studies Center Student Leader, I’ve applied to the Ignite Mentor program, and I was also accepted into the National Honors Society. I got a 175 on my PSAT (out of 240), and on a practice SAT, I got an 1840 (out of 2400). I plan to take SAT courses to improve this.

I know a lot of people stressing out over colleges, so I just wanted to have another person’s opinion on whether I would be able to get into Northwestern (based off of what I have so far, but under the assumption that I’d improve my test scores)

Retake SAT?

I am going to be a senior in high school next year. I am happy with my grades (4.5 GPA 10-12) and test scores, but I don’t think my extracurriculars are enough to get me into an elite school. All I have is IB Program, CSF, NHS, 4 years Track and 2 years basketball. I think if I got an amazing score on my SAT, I would be OK. Right now I’m sitting on a 2180 (800 Math, 730 Writing, 650 Critical Reading). If I worked hard, I really think I could get up to a 2250 or higher. I’ve taken it twice, and I actually deproved the second time. But I know I can improve. I have three months of summer + September to study. Should I do it, considering both previous times I took the test I only studided for three weeks max prior to the test?

Do colleges sometimes accept test scores that are lower than what their asking for?

This is NOT for ME. It’s for a friend, she has a good GPA, but her test scores are a little under what their (the college) are asking for. Not that much under, by the ways. She plans on taking the ACT again. So, my question is, do some colleges still accept people who’s test scores are a little low, but have good grade point averages?

Should I take my chances on the ACT or be complacent with average SAT II scores?

UCs want all test scores in by December. I have taken the SAT once and three SAT IIs. My SAT score is mediocre (1660), two of my SAT IIs are not great (550-600). Should I try the SAT again in December and deal with my average SAT II scores or should I take the ACT (for the first time) and retake subjects?
