Do I Have Any Chances at These Schools?

Hey,
I’m a sophomore in high school, and due to the way college is these days, i feel that I should begin looking into where I would like to go. I have a 3.38 GPA and I have gotten a 133 on my PSATs (52nd percentile on the SATs) and I was 59th percentile on my PLAN tests (just under a 22 on the ACTs). So, my test scores suck. Is it hard to improve if I have a tutor? In addition, I am on the golf team (Varsity Letterman). I do B’nai Brith Youth Organization (BBYO), volunteer, and participate in JCWA (Junior Council on World Affairs/ Model UN) and I volunteer at a museum. I plan on taking AP US Govt. Next year.Do I still have a chance of getting into any of these schools despite my current test scores? If not, do you have any other suggestions? Please Help Me! It’s really frustrating that I can’t get any straight answers. lol

My dad went to Ohio St. and went to law school there. (He still donates to the alumni fund)
My grandpa went to OSU and attended Dental School there.
I attend a highly-selective college prep high school in Cleveland, Ohio
I’m planning on getting a few reccomendation from some people that really like me (Can I Get my golf coach to fill one out?)

How hard is it to improve my test scores if i have a tutor?

Does this help at all?

I appreciate your Help & Advice

Can I get into a good college with a low GPA and high SAT scores?

Now my GPA is down right horrible.
I think it’s currently around 2.0
I know, I’m a horrible slacker.
I just don’t have motivation.

But when it comes to college I know I absolutely want to go to a reputable one.
I’ve always dreamed of NYU but I understand my GPA is making that nearly impossible.

I’m almost at mid Junior year and I recieved my PSAT scores.
I’ve always done well on tests and I have much more ability then I give effort (Which explains high test scores with a low GPA)

I am confident that I can make above the 2000’s on my SATs
So my question is: Do you think I can make it into a good college?
If not, is there any advice you can give on what I can do to improve how I look to these colleges?
I’ve also had a part-time job since I was 15 1/2 and I have volunteer work to add onto my resume.
Thanks for the responses, they really help.
Also, I know I should start to bring up my GPA which I still have a lot of time to do.
How high would I have to bring up my GPA to overlook the horrible grades in my previous years?

How can I drastically improve my SAT score? Please help!!?

The first time I took it was in Janurary, and honestly, I didn’t do any practice tests (I just went over a Kaplan study guide):
Critical Reading: 510
Math: 590
Writing: 530
Total: 1630

I took it again in May, and this time I took 4 practice tests from the Princeton Review, and for those, I got at least 2000s. I heard that the questions from Princeton Review are easier than the actual SAT, and my scores seem to prove this:
Critical Reading: 540
Math: 650
Writing: 610
Total: 1800

My scores are extremely disappointing, because I have been working my butt off at school, earning me a weighted GPA of 4.3 by the end of junior year. I am aiming for the top schools, my first choice being Duke University. I’m an international student, so I know that the colleges will expect a lower score from me than they will from American citizens, but I also need financial aid so I need to get the highest score possible (at least 2000).

(continued below)
Since I am very satisfied with my extracurriculars and GPA, it is very disappointing that my SAT score drags it down.

I bought a College Board study guide and I plan to go through the whole book this summer.

I am pretty good at math, but I just can’t seem to get the hard questions on the SAT correct. I’m supposing it’s because of text anxiety, since I get really nervous on tests, especially for math. At my math level, I should be getting perfect scores.

As for Critical Reading, I really don’t know how to improve it. I suppose my vocabulary is quite weak for the SATs since the I struggle the most for the sentence completion questions. Is memorizing vocabulary words the only way to improve my score? I am required to read 6 assigned books for the summer, so I’m guessing that should help my reading comprehension?

I am really aiming for at least a 2000, and I’m thinking of taking it a third (and final) time in October or December. Which do you think will be a better time for me to take it? I can’t take it in November since I’m taking the listening test. The only thing about taking it in December is that I won’t be able to apply for early decision. Should I give that up and have an extra 2 months by take it in December? Also, do colleges take the best individual scores from the 3 times I take it and add them up or not? Please help!!!

Are my SAT scores THAT BAD? Please help..?

Heya!
OK, let me tell you something about myself.
I live in NZ (little island in the oceania in vicinity to Australia), and I am in year 12 (I guess I can call myself a Sophomore/Junior).
I sat the SATs in May 2009 and my scores were posted 10 minutes ago.

And I got:

Maths: 730
Writing: 560
Reading: 620
= 1910.

Is it that bad? I feel really bad that I didn’t break the 2000 mark. Maybe it’s because I didn’t revise that well? (lol I did 2 exam papers 3 days before the day and that was it)

Please tell me how I can further improve my score and if I just live with a 1910, would I get into any of my "dream" colleges (listed below)?
University of California, Los Angeles, Berkeley, San Diego
Chicago
Michigan
Washinton at St. Luis
and of course the Ivy Leagues

I am most likely to resit the test with some intense preparation. How much do you think my score will raise? Would I be able to break the 2100 mark?

Sorry to bombard you with those endless questions. So any help is greatly appreciated.

Just got SAT score back, Need help!?

I just got my SAT score back, and I’m terrified by my writing score, a 600.
My scores are as followed:
Reading – 660
Math- 650
Writing- 600

This is my October scores, and I scheduled for November test, but I don’t know if I want to take it since I didn’t practice.

I can’t bring myself to practice for SATs, because im more of a active learner. I didn’t want to take the october test either, because i too busy during summer to study, since i found full time job. and after school started i got bombed with homework. I can’t find time to practice for sats, so any recommendations on how to improve sat score without practicing? and should i take the november test, b/c im hoping to break the 2000 mark.

How much will my SAT score improve?

I just moved from a foreign country and is planning to go to college in America. I took a SAT practice test and got a Math (750), Writing (400), C.R. (400). I applied for SAT prep tutoring 8 hrs every Saturday (4 hrs of SAT practice test/4hrs of lecture). In addition to this, I’m studying for the SATs on my own 1 hr a day and reading at least 1 hr a day to enhance my C.R. and Writing scores. If you estimate, how much do you think my SAT score will improve in a yr? By the way, I’m a sophmore and is aiming for the top schools.

Low SAT scores? Why!?

I take the highest classes available at my school (one of the best ranked by TIME). I get legit grades, almost all As and a few Bs. Last semester i had a 4.0 unweighted with an A- in Chemistry Honors.

I took a diagnostic test for my SAT prep course and i got a 1660.

I don’t get why I suck at taking standardized tests. (or just SATs, i suppose) I’m not even that stupid- so why these scores?

With my low SATs, I’m considering going to a music conservatory (because they don’t care about SATs) but I do want to go to a nice, private, liberal-arts college in the east coast. But a question is crossing my mind- Is that even possible?

I appreciate all of your answers (in advance).

Applying for college straight out of HS?

Or would it be smarter to take a year preparation break?

I ask this question not because I want to work for 4+ years and maybe go to college but due to the fact I don’t feel prepared.

I’m getting a 4.0 GPA with AP classes and I’m participating in track and also in National Honor Society doing community service, I however, fall in SAT scores.

As of now, I have everything to my advantage expect the fact I’m only at 1200+ SAT scores, (which is really confidence destroying low)

For me, I want to go to an all-around good college, not overly prestigious nor underly funded, but a balance in quality of life (I’m spending 4+ years there, I better enjoy it)

As I’ve researched many colleges over the months, most of the colleges with best value for education have semi-high standards. My favorite being University of Illinois at Urbana. Requiring at at least 560+ each section on SATs. Yet my highest SAT score was 510 in reading.

I’m wondering if it’s a good idea to take a year break solely to study for those next SATs and apply.

I know it’s not all about SATs but surely they have a cut off line, and I guarantee they’ll cut off my application when they see my extremely low SATs.

Or am I making a mistake? Will I be at a disadvantage applying?

Which SAT practice test books provide the best preparation for the real one?

I am taking the SATs in March and need to buy a book which provides the most realistic match with the real one. I have taken the SATs before and used the collegeboard and princeton book. I am currently using the McGraw Hill one with 12 pracice tests. I need to buy a new one, which one do you think will help me the most?
