Is it possible to get an 1800 on the SATs without enrolling into expensive classes/tutoring sessions?

I’m a high 80 avg student. I was wondering if it is possible for me to get an 1800 without taking Kaplan/Princeton etc. SAT prep courses. Is it possible for me to get around an 1700-1800 studying with only SAT books at home?

Are Kaplan's SAT tests more difficult than the real thing?

I got an 1870 about a year ago.

Then I attended a test prep course where I scored around 2000.

Then when enrolled in Kaplan, I took three practice tests. All were 1880.

I’m really scared. I’m trying to score 2000+ on the real thing. Are the Kaplan tests more difficult than the actual thing?

How are my SAT practice test scores?

So i took a SAT practice test and i got like a 1650 or somewhere in the 1600′s(that is if i got at least a 7 on my essay which i think i can do), i struggled in the CR section but, i mean who doesn’t? I did decent in math and writing. I was disappointed in my score, im aiming for 1900+, i’ve been studying A LOT, because its the summer, and when i say a lot i dont mean like 7 hours, i mean 12 freaking hours at my table doing practice problems every day, yes i said every day thats how bad i want it. Any other recommendations on how to raise my score??

Currently i’ve split my 4 month time period before i take the actual SAT, the first month and a half im going to concentrate in the math section, i bought Kaplan’s SAT math workbook, i’m pleased with it, it challenged me which is good, the 2nd month and a half i’m going to concentrate in the CR and vocabulary since they pretty much go hand in hand with each other. The last month and a half im going to concentrate on the writing section of the test, im going to buy a book for that too. After all of this i plan on taking 1 last practice test, to see how much i improved from my first 1600-1650.
I hope i do good on it, i want to go to UCLA, USC, or USD for computer science. I do dragon boat(paddling sport) and im going to continue to do it through senior year to show commitment, i’ve volunteered for all of the marathons in San Francisco, i’m currently in a academy in my high school, AOIT(Academy of Information Technology) i dont know how that’s going to help but, the more the better.
I’m a 3.75 GPA student, but last semester i got a 4.0 GPA, I’m taking pre calculus next year, and i plan on AP calculus, and Physics honors(theres no AP physics, honors is highest) in my senior year.
I said practice test, i didn’t get a 1600 on the real SAT, i’m studying for it, i only have 4 months, im going to take it in october.
Well, im my workbook, i usually try all the questions first, and if i dont get it after everything ill look in the back but, after i do a couple of problems i usually catch on and i’ll be able to do some of them by myself,

Well for the physical part, i have dragon boat for that, that takes like 3 hours of my day and i’m exhausted after it so ill take a nap.

When i finish all the questions in a section, i usually jump around in the same section and redo the questions again so i get more familiar with the question format.

What would you suggest for ACT preparation?

I made a 29 the first time I took the ACT as a sophomore. I am going to be a junior come August. I want to score at least a 33 composite. I am already taking some free online prep, but I was wondering if you would suggest Kaplan, ACT Online, Princeton, Sylvan, or some other test prep. Also, I feel very excited to take the ACT again and want to sign up for a December or February essay test, but I do not have AP English or Trig/Pre-cal until second semester. What do you guys think? :)

ACT or SAT? not sure which test to take prep classes for..?

i’ve heard that the East and West coast colleges look more at the SAT than the ACT. is that true?
i’m about to be a junior and i’ve taken the ACT once and got a 29, which i don’t think is bad for a first time. i wanna take it again once more and the SAT at least twice.
i’m debating what test to take Kaplan classes for and I’m not really sure.. any input? thanks (:

My Kaplan Runneth Over: A Parent’s Lament On the Cost of SAT Tutoring

My Kaplan Runneth Over: A Parent’s Lament On the Cost of SAT Tutoring

Unless your senior is planning on visiting the Sorbonne for a tour, or applying to two-dozen different colleges, the most significant of these expenses can often be the cost of tutoring. Of course, tutoring is not as essential to the college application process as, say, the SAT itself, or a strong personal essay. But SAT tutoring has persisted as a popular after-school activity for many seniors because taking the test requires a unique skill set, untaught in many high schools. As long as the SAT remains a barometer for scholastic performance, schools will continue to prepare their students for the SAT with varying degrees of success, or disregard the test and teach their own way. Either way, students will continue to receive varying test scores based on these factors, and many others. But what if our senior’s school doesn’t believe in “teaching for the test”? There’s a good chance the college they want to go to won’t look at their application without SAT scores. The SAT, and all the cost and preparation it entails, seems unavoidable.

Enter the SAT tutor. Year after year, tutoring services like Kaplan and The Princeton Review maintain a stable of college-aged tutors, prepared to give seniors the inside track to SAT success. At the rate of about 0 per hour, SAT tutoring is often a source of groans from parents, and a very popular job for college students. In a recession, how can a parent conscience spending that kind of money? Why not tell our senior to hit the books on their own instead?

The fact is, the results of test prep services don’t lie, even when the “guaranteed score increases” and supporting data published by many test prep services can be exaggerated. SAT tutors do help, often more than just studying prep books. It’s probably not coincidental that the top tutoring services publish their own study guides, guides that can be significantly augmented by their own tutors. Independent tutors, while less likely to guarantee their results, are generally less expensive. Some, such as Parliament Tutors, even offer a sort of financial aid program, offering discounts to students in need. Will financial aid for SAT tutoring be widespread in the future? The outlook is doubtful, but it seems a step in the right direction. What would be truly ideal would be a financial aid program for the entire application process. But who would provide such aid? The senior’s high school? The college he or she gets accepted to? With endowments down, and public and private high schools strapped for cash, neither case seems likely. It’s ultimately up to the parent to decide what the value of an SAT tutor is, and find a tutoring option to meet their price point.

David Greenberg is an SAT Tutor with Parliament Tutors.

What is the best SAT prep book that aids you in getting a highest score?

I have wondered what the answer is, and so far I came up with:

1.Princeton Rewiev
2. Kaplan’s
3.Barrons
4. and College Board

Can anybody tell me which book has the hardest test questions, and a good section for helping preparation for writing essays, reading comprehension, and vocabulary?

How much can I raise my SAT Scores?

I scored a 1500 on a Kaplan practice diagnostic SAT, and at 1520 on my PSAT.

With this in mind I’d like to raise my SAT scores at least into the 1700′s.

First off, is this possible if I take a course, or start using a book? I scored a 1500 without studying, or really trying to do well, and I’m not really happy with that score so I’d like to improve it.

How many points do you think I could raise my score?
